One Week Down!

Written on February 8th, 2010 by adminno shouts

Well there is one week down and hopefully you have started amassing poems! What? “No”?

Well go back and do the exercises, even if you run them all as response writing exercises and forget the poem bit – you may find that when you look back at them something poetic will jump out!

Fresh people are joining the challenge of WoPoWriMo and poems are being put on WoPoWriMo Poems, we have participents in four continents and are covering a wide range of ages and styles.

Go get writing those poems!

And for those feeling they are producing too much and it’s all drivel – keep writing, some of it can be edited into shape. As for the rest…. well, you obviously need to get it out of your system.

Write-Ins and Meet-Ups

Written on February 6th, 2010 by adminno shouts

We cannot sanction or really encourage meet-ups with people in your areas that you don’t already know, as we do not have ML’s and the like that NaNoWriMo have and so we can not add a structure and safety aspect to the meets.

That being said they are one of the most productive writing activities you can take part in and they can be a lot of fun and we are aware they are happening anyway, so here is a guide of how to do it safely.

Never give out your address if you are organising it – organise the meet-up to be in a very public place, preferably during the day. Go with a friend and if you are under 16 you should be taking a parent or guardian along too (at least to the first one). Make sure people know that you are going out and how long you should be gone for – maybe text in regually to let them know all is well.

Again do be careful if you organise it as a ‘public’ event as there are some strange people out there.

WoPoWriMo Poems

Written on February 4th, 2010 by adminno shouts

There is now an area for poets to put up their poems and share their work – check it out here.

Poems can be made ‘private’ so they don’t count as published. All rights remain with the author of the poem, so if you like what you see don’t nick it; just ask and see what they say!

Obviously you will get more feedback if your poem is public 🙂

And apologies that the poems page did not initially appear on the site but it is there now.

At Midnight…

Written on January 31st, 2010 by adminno shouts

It is the 31st of January and that means one thing – tonight at the stroke of midnight it becomes the fabled month of February, a time when bards and poets sit down to compose.

A time of poetic abandon and insanity that lasts for a whole month.

That’s right, it is almost WoPoWriMo time; so I hope you all have a good stock of pens, pencils, notebooks and/or electronic devices to capture those little ditties that are pushing at your brain cells for release!

Happy composing… get ready, get steady… wait for midnight… GO!!!!

Itinerary

Written on January 11th, 2010 by adminone shout

During January the WoPoWriMo Pledge becomes available to well…erm.. pledge at.

The idea of WoPoWriMo is to write a poem a day for the whole of February so on February 1st those signed up to the mailing list will receive an embarking pep talk. These pep talks/news bulletins will continue at aproximatly one a week for the whole of February.

Posts will be going up daily with exercises and ideas to help get the creative juices going – these should go live at 6 am GMT each day so that you can get those pesky poems written on the way to or during down time at work 😉 You do not have to write from the ideas or exercises; they’re just there as a resource in case writer’s block hits!

Posts containing relevant information to poets will also be appearing, such as useful links, book reviews and competitions.

And, hopefully, there will be some inspirational words from established poets, writing tutors and the like.

Post-February (i.e. early March) a completed pledge list will be compiled, and completion freebies given out (don’t get too excited about this; it will probably all be electronic!).

The remainder of March and April will see information on editing and poetic form on the blog.

A charity anthology of contributed poems may also be on the cards and we would love donations of poems written during WoPoWriMo but this is still uncertain – as is the charity it would be for!

WoPoWriMo

World Poetry Writing Month

WoPoWriMo is a poetry writing feast along the lines of NaNoWriMo! For each day of February participants write one poem. The poem can be raw and unedited – the point of the exercise is to get the bones or concept of the poem down onto the page or screen or restaurant napkin. Making it into a smooth shiny monster can happen later on!

So, next question: what are we considering a poem?

We are including all poetic forms including the prose poem, haikus, sonnets, pentameter and anything else that could arguably be called a poem. We are also including song lyrics, as the distinction between lyrical poetry and actual song lyrics is indeed a very blurry thing. Street poetry and rap are as welcome as the floaty Byrons of the 21 century. VisPo (visual poetry), the new and upcoming wave of poetry so far relegated to the edges of the poetry world, is also welcomed – and indeed encouraged!

Performance, kids, even limericks – the idea is to get you writing those poems as a creative expression.

You can mix and match form, or if you wish to write an epic poem along the lines of the Illiad and Odysseys (the first European Literary efforts were indeed very long poems!) then we suggest setting yourself a target of 40 lines a day.

And, yes, we are aware that poems are technically composed and not written, but WoPoCoMo was just too hard to say!

This blog will be a source of resources, stimulus for those with a creative blockage, and mutual support – if we get enough numbers our tech will sort us out a forum but until then….

Happy Composing 🙂
