Built in Stone

The word built carved into stone and part of a building, think about the concept behind this, it is similar to writing – write and marks a loop in human creation. The point at which our ideas and capacity start to feed into each other to take us to the next level.

Think on the innovation and developments that surround us and the pace at which it is all moving.

Spent 20 minutes writing on these themes.

Helping Science with Poetry

Written on October 4th, 2010 by adminone shout

We here at team WoPo thought that all you budding poets out there might be interested in helping science!

In the UK at the moment there are proposed funding cuts to the sciences and not small ones either. So we here at WoPo would like as many of you as possible to add your own verse as to why Science is Vital here. And if you are a UK resident there is also a petition which you can sign here.

We view this as Art in Support of Science.

National Poetry Day UK 2010

Written on September 27th, 2010 by adminno shouts

Next week on Thursday the 7th of October it is National Poetry Day UK and theme this year is Home. We suggest you go and have a little looking and then use the theme to inspire yourself to some poetic musings 🙂

If you are stuck with how to begin try just writing down a list of what your home means to you! Think of it’s physical features and it’s emotions, draw on your senses to build a vivid picture. Imagine what it would be like to be without a home.

Good luck everyone 🙂

The End, The Victory – A beginning

Written on February 28th, 2010 by adminno shouts

You’ve made it to the end of WoPoWriMo! Well done! Fantastic! And as for those who didn’t hit the 28 poems? Well, you still probably got a lot more down on paper than you would have otherwise, so join in our party!

Don’t forget the Pledge which will still be open until tonight 🙂 So if you haven’t signed it yet sign it and tick completion too!

And remember this is not the end but rather a beginning – there is a lot of work ahead polishing and perfecting those poems you’ve been beavering away at, and also the constuction of a Chap book for those who are interested.

Later there will be a charity anthology – but more on that later! (This is seperate from the chapbook, and we will ask for submissions for the two projects separately)

Information, events and advice will continue to be posted on the site year round so come back and check, or use the RSS feed 🙂

And lastly thank you to everyone who has taken part – from the guest bloggers, to the admin team, to you guys the poets who have worked so hard for this month of poetic abandon!

We hope it has been an enjoyable month for all 🙂

Day Twenty-Eight – Solitary Reflections

Written on February 28th, 2010 by adminno shouts

Solitary Reflections photo by Ella Gale loaned to WoPoWriMo in good faith so please don’t nick but go and talk to her!

This picture is beautiful, elegant and entrancing – look at the single figure reflected in its own private world. Write the feelings and emotions this photograph engenders in you.

To start you off you may wish to just describe the colours and contrasts or the set up of the scene – why is he there?

Was he frozen by some hysterical god of old?

Ponder these things and write.

Day Thirteen – Flower in The Rain

Written on February 13th, 2010 by adminno shouts

Look at this picture – let it speak to you, see how the discarded can become beautiful or how nature had a plan. See how the water droplets enhance its colour compared to the grey sinister world.

Flower in the Rain

Now go and write 🙂

Getting Ready for WoPoWriMo

Written on January 25th, 2010 by adminone shout

There is a week to go before WoPoWriMo is here, and for those who are panicking we thought it might be a good idea to get you thinking about writing and form.

Though you can’t really count any poems written outside of February, you can collect ideas and stimuli and maybe even get yourself in the practice of writing. There are numerous writing excersises on the Gurgitation Monster Blogs Blue and Red. Although not exclusively poetry based, these are a good source of ideas.

Another thing you can do is go for a walk and collect a few leaves or twigs or pennies from the ground (obviously avoid any suspicous yellow snow or weird smelling puddles). Bring these back and arrange them nicely on a tray or in a box. Then collect some bits and bobs you like from around your house (best if they belong to you and are not your great aunt’s diamante tiara) and arrange these similarly.

This is your inspiration box or tray and you can continue to add to it. You can add photos or postcards; for the more technically minded/entrenched maybe make a list of links to inspiring images or web-sites on your blackberry or iphone etc….

To warm you up each day, just take an object from the box and spend 5 minutes writing about it. Don’t worry what you are writing, just write, even if it is just a description. You may find the seeds of a poem in the dross you write; you may even be lucky enough to produce a full blown poem!

You can of course save this all for WoPoWriMo itself – it’s up to you 🙂 Compiling a list of ideas is another good prep and the longer the list the more likely poems will flow from it!

There will be more exercises and the like during February for you all to enjoy.

Good luck and inspiration to you all!
